Compass heading

I am trying to tie the leds on the creator to magnetic north. But before that, I am having trouble finding the magnetic north from the magnatometer. From what I have read, it should be as easy as atan2(Y,X). I get the incorrect result from compass_demo.cpp. What else am I missing? I have thought about declination which is about 11 degrees in my location. But the values seem to be way off.
