MOS Being Deprecated, Announcing New Library MATRIX Lite

#1

Dear MATRIX Community,

Starting February 28th, 2019, we will be deprecating MATRIX OS (MOS) and will no longer be updating or providing support for it. Additionally, we will be unable to guarantee its functionality going into the future which means that it may cease functioning at anytime without warning.

We came to this difficult decision due to complications with the backend infrastructure that supports MOS as well as several dependencies that created breaking changes. MOS was an ambitious library with a lot of moving parts and features including a dashboard, app store, CLI tool, and more. All of these features made for an amazing tool for our users, however, it became increasingly difficult to support.

Among MOS’s many features there was one that stood out the most and it was the simple and minimalistic programming in Javascript. With just one line you could make the LED’s of your MATRIX Device red or output sensor data to the console. We believe this is an extremely valuable feature that allows users from any background or skill level to program their MATRIX Devices and because of this we are excited to announce MATRIX Lite!

MATRIX Lite is a new library that we have created to enable you to quickly and easily program your MATRIX Device. MATRIX Lite communicates directly with MATRIX HAL allowing for blazing fast sensor output without the overhead/complexity of the local ZeroMQ server or the need to connect to the internet and communicate with our infrastructure. Additionally, we intend for MATRIX Lite to support multiple languages! We have already created the base functionality in Javascript and are currently building the support for Python.

We are super excited about MATRIX Lite and have many plans for it which we will go over in greater detail within a future post. In the mean time, checkout the links below to our Javascript and Python MATRIX Lite repos and be sure to let us know of any issues you may encounter or features you would like us to add!

If you have any questions about the deprecation of MOS please email info@matrixlabs.ai with the subject line “MOS Deprecation”. If you have any questions, issues, or feature requests for MATRIX Lite please open a GitHub issue or create a post on our community.

Finally, we would like to thank our entire MATRIX Community for your continued support and dedication to our platform. Everyday we are inspired by how you are using our devices and we are committed to improving our platform to make it even easier for you to create whatever it is you want to create.

Sincerely,
Team MATRIX

If this helps reliability, I’ll be happy :slightly_smiling_face:

Got to say my experience has been that it kept breaking anyway, and the normal best response was reinstall everything from scratch, especially when things like regular kernel and package updates would break things. Feels like it held back the full potential…
